Oftentimes, clients get frustrated with childish, mean, or inappropriate behavior on the part of people they are divorcing. I find myself giving some advice repeatedly to clients about this problem. And here it is:
There is short term and long term. If your soon to be ex-spouse lies to you, don’t retaliate, just note it. If the other side attempts to hide money, do not do likewise. If you always try to ‘hit back’, you will look bad to the judge. The judge determines a lot of things. I am not saying to just take whatever the other side does. Talk with your attorney about concerns you have. Take notes of things you think would be helpful to your case.
Oftentimes people do nasty things to get short term satisfaction during the divorce such as refusing the non-custodial parent to see their child. Such behavior is hurtful, and makes the other parent mad. But rather than get back, get the issue to the judge, let the judge see the other spouse’s bad behavior, and thus you will be more likely to get a permanent order you like.
